Growing up as a girl, playing traditional board games was not uncommon. There weren’t many other options, especially in the winter. You used what you had or you could be bored and it would be your own fault. I don’t really recall having a family game night as a kid. My dad wasn’t home much because of his career and I think my mom was just too tired trying to raise 4 children to the best of her ability. You always had a sibling though to play with and we made whatever we did fun. At least most of the time it was fun….I’m sure that they have a different story to tell seeing as how I am the older sister.
Now that I have 2 girls, my husband and I try to incorporate family game night at our home. Some of the traditional board games have been replaced with a digital version. And now that there is a wide range of gaming systems to choose from, everyone can be involved. From young to old, we have a grand time watching or playing each other. I still love our board games, playing cards and poker chips but it is neat to see how family game night has evolved over the years.
One of the best things that has stemmed from having family game night and being able to connect via the internet is that my family is now able to play online with one another. My girls look forward to a weekend night when they can challenge Uncle Frank or Uncle Brian at Mario Cart who live in different sections of the country. When they were born, I never thought that they would be able to build a relationship through family game night but they have. It’s kind of cool how we can do that.
