Get a Hobby!
By Laura Kelly-Pifer
Hobby – an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation: Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving.
So, in reading this this definition, I DO NOT have a hobby. I could count blogging and reading as hobbies but really, those are based around my occupation. I enjoy my job and find those things fun and interesting but, should I really include them? Probably not or else I’m pretty much working all the time. And, there needs to be some separation there.
When this question was asked of me, I started thinking about what kind of hobby I could pick up. What would be something that I enjoy and want to continue doing? What would be something that I’d really want to do and not just list for the sake of saying I have a hobby? It’s something too, that I had to take a look at while doing Ultimate Reset. What can I add to my life that is healthy, positive, fun or relaxing? So, my quest begins….
For the last 15 years, I’ve done pretty much what I needed to do to “get by.” Between working full time, building my own business and having a family and a house to maintain, I kind of lost me along the way. I didn’t include any personal time for me in my schedule. I don’t regret ANY of it. It’s what helped make me who I am today. But, there will be a time when the girls are off doing their own thing and Bob and I will need something to do, in our off time. And, I need something separate from him too. He has his own hobbies and some of those, I don’t enjoy one bit. Regardless, we need something fun, relaxing, positive and healthy!
I figured it would be easier to start with things that I know that I do not enjoy. I know I don’t care for amusement rides or anything with a whole lot of motion. I also know that I do not like water so anything involving that is out, other than sitting on the shore. (It’s one of my FAVORITE places, by the way!) By eliminating water and the whole amusement park scene, I’ve cut out all sorts of stuff. Bob and my girls enjoy that and I’ll be glad to watch them from the shore or the park bench, safely away until I’m ready to let go of my fear.
Do I want to golf, do I want to start a book club, and do I want to learn to sew? WOW! There are so many choices but I don’t know where I should begin. So, I started with something simple that I know I’d enjoy. Reading! A friend recommended that I get the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy. BOOM! I was hooked; all 3 books in a little over a week. I made it a habit to read a little before bed each night. And guess what!?! It felt great to unwind, go to bed relaxed and do something for me!
I’ve decided to try hiking next. It’s been years since I’ve done it and Bob and the girls will be joining me. We’ve got some great trails here in Northwest Pa. Why not take advantage of it, right!?! After that, who knows? Maybe 4 wheeling, skiing, or bird watching. I’m open to suggestions and trying new things.
So, inquiring minds want to know…..Do YOU have a hobby? Leave me a comment or post what your hobby is on my facebook wall. I’d LOVE to learn what you do for fun. You might inspire me to try something new. 🙂
