Lonely woman in a park in autumn

Fall has arrived and while it’s beautiful, it can be tough for some folks, sometimes leading into a depression.  Unfortunately, it’s a feeling that many of us experience this time of year.

As the days get shorter, the weather is colder and that feeling of being “stuck” inside begins to occur, there can come a “funk” with it.

If you’re feeling like you’re unmotivated and having trouble adjusting to the change, these three tips might help.

Make your environment sunnier and brighter.  Open your blinds and curtains and allow the sun to shine in.  You can even choose to sit closer to bright windows while at home or in the office.   If you’re having lunch or dinner out, ask to sit by the window.
Get outside.  Take a walk or bike ride, eat lunch outside, or simply sit out on your deck and soak up the sun.  The fresh air will do you good, even on cold or cloudy days and you’ll benefit from any kind of natural lighting.
Exercise regularly. Exercise and other types of physical activity help lift your mood. If the weather is too bad for you to head out, dust off your fitness DVD’s and give them a go.  You can even crank up some of your favorite music and dance like no one’s watching.  Either way, find an activity that you enjoy and then do it.

These three tips might not seem like much but can make quite an impact.  If you think that you’re suffering from depression, please reach out and seek treatment from a physician.   You’ll be given a plan with the goal of helping you feel better.

If you have additional tips to help get rid of the fall funk, do share.  Our community is always looking for healthy ways to live.
