Goal Setting:101

By Laura Kelly-Pifer

Goals…do you set them?  Throughout life, I have been told that I needed to have goals in order to achieve the things I wanted.  And that’s the way that I’ve worked and lived.  Year after year, I would make goals and work towards them but not all of my goals I would reach.  Some were easy and some were so darn hard.  Some I set because others in my industry said I should and some I set because I thought it’s what would make life better for my family and in reality, it made things worse.  I learned though by working with a Coach/Mentor that there was actually a process behind goal setting and began creating a new life that made me happy.  Today, I thought I would share some of what I learned  with you.

No matter what your goal is, be it weight loss, paying off debt, getting your “dream job,” etc. you can apply this process and see your goals become reality.

The first thing to do when setting goals…BElieve in YOUrself!  That means you must Be You and set goals that fit YOUR life.  You must believe that you will accomplish them too.  The more faith you have in yourself, the better.

The next step is to Define and Visualize Your Goal.   You’ll write it down on 4 pieces of paper and you’ll want to make sure that it’s specific, stated in the positive, and includes a time frame for when you plan to achieve it.  Place these 4 pieces of paper where you are at most during the day, it could be your nightstand, your desk, on the fridge and even in the car.  You’ll then want to read it (aloud if possible) throughout the day.  Visualize yourself already at goal.  How does it feel?  What do you see?

Third, you’ll want to Find your Why.  Write down as many reasons as you can think of why you want to achieve your goal.  Again, be specific.  Brainstorm and fill up a sheet of paper with every reason you can think of.  As you are working on your goal, there may be times where you lose some motivation.  It happens to all of us from time to time.  This is when you will refer back to this list so that the motivation returns and you can get back on track.

Lastly, Establish a Plan.  We can make goals and we can list our whys but we need a plan to make it happen.  If it’s weight loss, think about what it will take to achieve that goal.  Will you need to exercise?  Will you need to make changes in the foods that you eat?  Will you need to enlist the help of someone else?  It sounds simple but it’s true…When you have a plan in place, it’s easier to do.

If you found this helpful or know someone who could benefit from these tips then I invite you to share and pay it forward.

With Love,

Laura
