How Group Support turned my life around!

By Laura Kelly-Pifer

I can remember the first time I walked into my 1st weight loss meeting and getting the guide books.  It seems like yesterday.  I was going to have to cook, learn to eat vegetables and even exercise.  It was a whole new territory for me and one that I wasn’t thrilled about but one that I knew I needed to go through with.  I had never really exercised and having a husband who was a former US Marine; it was always give it your ALL and do your very best.  Anything less was an unacceptable kind of mentality.  I always felt like he was a Drill Sargent in regards to physical fitness and that kind of “motivation” does not work well for me.  In fact, I shut down.  And cooking….who the heck had time for that?  I had 2 little girls who I saw for “maybe” a total of 2-3 hours per day.  Cooking just took more time away from them.  And, Bob, he was always at work so most everything I had to do on my own.   Boy, what was I thinking!?!

To tell you a little bit about how I had gotten to this point let me share this with you.  In the past, I didn’t have to exercise and fast food was a regular staple in our home.  For the most part, I had always been thin.  It wasn’t until after having my 2 girls and had packed on the “baby weight”, the stress of working a demanding job and a husband’s work schedule that left me alone most of the time, that I’d lay in bed, eating bags upon bags of chips to help me cope with the loneliness and isolation that I felt.  And, there was no time for a social life so forget the notion of having friends outside of work.  Does any of that sound familiar?

By attending meetings at work, I was able to start my weight loss journey.  It was fun and even a little competitive.  But, when I was laid off with approximately 50 others due to ”corporate downsizing”, and all the weight I had lost came creeping back on PLUS even more.   The support system that I had wasn’t there any longer and then BOOM! almost 4 years had passed.  I knew what I should be doing but the mental block remained there.  I needed a group setting.  It wasn’t until I purchased Ten Minute Trainer and went onto the Beachbody Forums that I met another group of women.  They were from all walks of life and like me, were looking for help.   The support group helped turn my life around and we’ve shared some pretty amazing experiences together online and off.   That decision, little did I know at the time, would be a turning point in my life on so many levels.

So, with all of that being said and so much more I could share with you, I wanted to let you know that I really and truly feel group support is a wonderful thing.  It’s helped me so much more than what I can type into words today.  I want to invite each and every one of you to my personal facebook group.   There we support each other, through weight loss, personal issues and more. It continues to help me.  And, there isn’t any drama…none of that allowed.  We ALL want a positive, encouraging place to hang.  I hope to see you there!
