How To Get More Stuff Done With A To Do List
By Laura Kelly-Pifer
School is session for my girls and with that comes homework and school sports and on some days, we are headed in more than one direction. Add to that that I am a Busy Professional also taking classes of my own. It’s easy to get distracted when there is so much stuff to be done.
Recently, I’ve been asked How I Do It all and What My Secret Is. So, today, I want to share what works for me. This is what I do each day to help me stay on track.
I use a To Do List. Yep, it’s something that simple. Now, I will tell you that it took me some time to fine tune what works for me. You’ll want to do the same. Regardless of if it’s on paper or a smartphone app, a To Do List will help you stay focused, organized and on track with meeting your goals.
See below for a picture of mine.
As you can see, it’s a basic 8-person calendar. Something similar to what you might see in a Doctor’s office. Why do I use this? For me, I like to track each person’s appointments. I have a column listed for each of us. I’m a visual person so this is why I choose to do it this way. I use the other side to record my To Do’s for the day. In each box, I’ll write out that day’s task. If something needs moved, I move it. And for me, I LOVE being able to cross things off.
Now if the thought of creating a To Do list scares you, there are some reasons why you might want to reconsider.
- More Time in Your Day – When you have a list of all your tasks, you are better prepared to make a plan. When you plan for the day, you can potentially save time. Who doesn’t want more time? If I know what needs done and what’s expected out of me, I am better at getting things done. And if I get more time, I get to do FUN things.
- Better Memory – For years, I relied on memory to get things done and I would end up forgetting things. This would just make me mad and I’d end up overwhelmed. Let’s face it…we can’t remember everything. Writing it down, helps improve your memory.
- Better Productivity – By creating your list, you are then able to prioritize your day. Why waste time on things that aren’t especially important as others. You’ll get things done quicker when you prioritize your To Do list.
- More Motivation – When you cross things off your list, you begin to see progress and you are taking steps to reach your goal. Progress is a BIG motivator for some.
So, start making your to-do lists today. It can be on paper, or an app. Either way works. You’ll soon be less stressed, more organized and you might find yourself with more time in the day than you ever realized you had!
