Say Cheese!

By Laura Kelly-Pifer

This weekend, I had the opportunity to come across a blog post titled “So you’re feeling too fat to be photographed…”.  As I read it, I started to tear up.  I’m a fairly emotional person so reading her story and feeling the pain she felt impacted me.   I could totally relate to what I was reading.   I had lived a fairly similar life for over a decade.

Why would this article move me so much?  Well, in all honestly, it was because I was one of those folks who avoided being in front of the camera.  Instead, I hid behind it.  I was the one that would watch everyone having fun and take “action shots” as they did things.  I didn’t want to be in the photographs either.  I was overweight, tired, frustrated and not liking myself let alone loving me for just being me.

Looking through our family photo albums, there are very few pictures of me.   What I regret is that other than a few professional photos, I don’t have many pictures of me with my girls.  I do have the memories that we made together in my mind but there are many times I’d like to look back and see us doing things together in the form of a photograph. There are few pictures of me celebrating milestones with friends and there are very few pictures of my husband and me on date night.  But enough about that.  Why?  I can’t go back and change my past but I can change my future.

A few years back, I gave myself permission to love me.  When I say me, I mean ALL of me; flaws and all.  I started living life again.  Not only am I behind the camera but now I’m in front of it too.   My husband and kids didn’t love me any less because of my weight gain but love me for who I am.  They want me to be happy and I want that too.   Once I started living life again and accepting who I was, things started to shift in my health and happiness.  I am worthy of living a healthy life and you are too.

I encourage you to read the article.  It’s quick and to the point.  And, if you’re hiding behind the camera, know that you aren’t alone.   I’d LOVE to see you step out and start living life and say “cheese!” more often.  YOU DESERVE it!

Wishing you good health!
