Are You Stuck and Burnt Out?

By Laura Kelly-Pifer

How many of you are working day in and day out and feeling like you’re not getting anywhere?  I was there.  I know the feeling of feeling stuck and being burnt out.  Let me share a secret with you….there is a way to get out of that.

It wasn’t all to long ago that I made one decision to change that.  I was working at a job that I wasn’t enjoying; I was working for a paycheck and nothing more.  I wasn’t challenged enough, didn’t have a whole lot of opportunity for advancement and disappointed that even though I had a gracious employer who worked with me to help me try and put family first, I was still missing out on the family time I had envisioned.  My girls were literally growing up in front of me and there was no way I could stop it.  My husband’s job takes him from home most of the time.  They needed at least one parent who could be there for them.  It took a family illness, my mom being diagnosed with breast cancer, to assist me in making a decision that I’m ever so grateful for.

A few years earlier, I had taken a chance on starting up my own home-based business.  I dabbled at it and didn’t really do much with it.  It was more or less something to keep me busy; not that I wasn’t already but more like a hobby.  When my mom got sick, my home-based business supported me to go back home and help her while she was treated and help her get her affairs in order.  It allowed me to work less hours at my ‘regular’ job so that I could continue to assist her while she was too weak to take care of everything else in her life and made up for the missing pay that I didn’t get because I didn’t have sick, personal or vacation days to use.  This would have put my husband and I into a financial hardship and one we would have moved forward with regardless but, it certainly made things easier.   For me, going home and helping where I could was an important part in my mom getting well again.  If she had less to do, she could focus of feeling better and beating cancer.   And, I’m happy to announce that she is cancer free today.

Little did I know at the time but he hobby that I had, turned into much more.   It grew into a business that paid more than what I was making at my 9-5 job.  It also helped me focus on what I wanted my life to look like and it helped keep me sane and my mind occupied when there was so much worry going on in my personal life.  I eventually ended up putting my notice in at work.  It was both a sad and happy time for me.  Sad in the sense of leaving friends but happy knowing that the things I had missed out on…the challenges, the opportunity for advancement and putting my family first which took priority over anything else was actually taking place.  I’m now able to spend summer at the pool with my girls, enjoy a long lunch with a friend and helping people reach their own goals while reaching mine.  All the things that I dreamed of doing.  There hasn’t been a day that goes by that I regret my decision.

If you’re feeling stuck or burnt out, there is hope.  There is more out there and you too, can live the life you dream of.

Wishing you good health!
