Summer Time Weight Loss Tips

By Laura Kelly-Pifer

Summer time.  It’s my second favorite time of year.  There are parties, reunions, graduations, weddings, vacations and so much more.   For me, it’s a FUN time of year and probably one of the easiest times for me to lose weight.

Now you’re probably thinking how is she losing weight with all that stuff going on!?!  Well, I want to share with you how this happens.

First off, the biggest thing I do is stay “plugged in.”  What that means is that I keep in contact with my coach and my Downsizers group, even while all this stuff is going on.  Yep, even on vacation.  I know me and know that I need accountability; you may be like that too.  I’ve tried losing weight on my own in the past and it didn’t work.  I need a support system that will lift me when I’ve fallen down and celebrate with me when I see progress, even in my maintenance phase.  And, I continue to journal my meals so I know where I’m at each day.

Second, I keep planning.  I plan my meals during the summer time too.   We still need to eat and nothing really changes just because it’s a different time of the year.   If there is a special occasion coming up, I use that my “flex” meal or I’ll eat before I go or even take my own meal.   Even on vacation, we plan our meals.  We rent a beach house and choose to eat “in” most nights.  It’s less expensive, better for you and better quality most times.  Plus, my girls don’t want to leave the beach and eating dinner in their swimsuits on the deck with the ocean behind them is a rare treat.   When we do stay in a hotel, I look for one that has a small kitchen so that I can make our meals.  And, if there isn’t one and we do need to eat out, I look for the healthiest item on the menu and I make sure that I have my Shakeology on hand for at least one of our meals each day.

Third, shop local.  One of my FAVORITE things to do is shop.   There are actually three parts to this tip that I must share with you.

The first part of this tip is to shop at your local fruit and veggie stands.  Not only are you supporting your local farmer, but you are getting some great tasting produce that is freshly picked, less expensive and more than likely grown with minimal pesticides.  When you shop from a stand or market, you can inquire as to what their growing process is.  And, I don’t know about you but there’s nothing quite like eating something really fresh.

The second part of this is to pick your own.   Growing up, my mom would take us to pick blueberries and strawberries at some of the local farms.  My Granddaddy also had a farm and we’d pick collards and green beans and all sorts of things from there.  It was so fresh and so good and it’s something good I remember from childhood.  Looking back, I know we burnt a boatload of calories harvesting all this on our own, even if we did pick and eat at the same time. 🙂

The third part of this tip is simply this…yard sales or garage sales.  As silly as that may seem to weight loss, it’s a tip that few folks don’t think about but should.  Television sets, DVD players, weight benches, weight sets, fitness DVD’s, CD’s, treadmills, exercise bikes, BBQ’s  and so much more can be found at a yard sale and for a fraction of the price bought brand new.  You could set up your own home gym with what you find.

Fourth, take it outside.  Think about all of the activities that are around you that involve the outdoors during the summer.  Some of what I have here in my local area, of Northwestern Pennsylvania, are hiking, bike riding, canoe trips down the Allegheny River, geocaching and so much more.   Even in larger areas, there are walking tours, marathons, summer camps and a wide variety of ways to keep your fitness intact.

So, in today’s post, I’ve equipped you with some of my most powerful tips for summer time weight loss.  Get out there and do it.  I know you can.

With Love,

Laura
